Age Is in the middle of The Ears

My mum was amazing! She didn't let age stand in her way. When my dad passed away due to a long illness, after a duration of intense grief, my mum made the comment. "I've decided to make the best of what I have." She had her faith and her family. However, this 5 foot tall whirlwind also needed an outlet for her high-level energy; so, in her late 70s, Mom asked me to create a résumé for her. I listed her perceive at the Boeing firm preceded by many years in the retail field, and mom set off to observe joining the work force once again. She didn't drive, so that meant seeing a job within walking distance.

She was hired at a around tea room/bakery, and loved the job. And the clients loved her-as well as her delicious, homemade cinnamon rolls. One of her quarterly customers confided that she concept she'd take her pre-school daughter to someone else restaurant for a change, but the diminutive girl started crying and said, "I want to go to lunch where I can see the grandma lady."

Japanese School Girls

When that firm closed, she once again circulated her résumé and landed a job at Skipper's. Fish and fries become her game. supervision soon noticed that she worked circles around the younger staff members. Mom even won a regional worker award from the company. She loved working with the teen-age crew, and they found in her a grandmother-figure in whom they could confide.

She didn't expect any special considerations or help because of her age-or height. If something needed to be done, she'd see that the task was completed one way or another. When an object was situated on a high shelf, she didn't wait for someone else worker to take it down. She found a stool to stand on and climbed up a integrate of shelves to retrieve what she needed. More than one manager practically went into cardiac arrest upon viewing that scene.

Her calisthenics were also apparent in the supermarket when she used a banana or box of cereal as tools to pull something off of a high shelf, and then would catch it before the object hit the floor. When I asked her, "Mom, why don't you ask a clerk for help?" her response was always, "I don't have time to wait." She had things to do and places to go.

Mom loved adventure! She often worked the evening shift at Skipper's, so when she called me on one chance and said I wouldn't need to pick her up because someone else worker was taking her home, that seemed fine to me-until she "confessed" the next day that her ride was on the back of a motorcycle. She concept that was pure fun. Gray curls anchored by her navy blue Skipper's hat, and her uniform sweater whipped by the wind, she was quite the sight. Her only complaint was the driver didn't go fast enough.

On her 80th birthday, the reader board outside of Skipper's said, "Help Us Celebrate Gladys' 80th Birthday." Friends and customers came for cake and conversation with the birthday girl. She loved it! It practically eclipsed the large family party held later that day.

Mom didn't think like an "old person." She kept up with what was happening in our world straight through the newspaper, magazines, Tv, and discussions with family and friends. When population heard she was in her 80s, it was hard for them to believe. Our mom didn't think she was old, so acted accordingly.

Have you ever met an individual in his or her 40s who seemed in fact old? That's often the case when man has a glum outlook on life and focuses entirely on himself or herself. Learning has stopped and the word "goal" is no longer a part of that person's vocabulary.

We all comprehend the significance of physical rehearsal for optimum health, but scientists now recognize that as population grow older they need to "exercise" their brains normally to help that organ function longer and better.

There's a big, fantastic world out there-in fact, 194 countries-just waiting to be explored. straight through travel, books, movies, magazines, educational courses, and the Internet, one's mind can expand while the world grows smaller. And Learning is a way to keep young.

We're all growing older every day that we live-no one is exempt-but our capability of life is affected by our attitude, health, goals, and the desire to keep learning.

The Japanese have a proverb that says, "We begin aging when we stop learning." So Mom was right-age is between the ears.

Cosplay in Japanese Culture

Cosplay is not little to dressing up in costumes from beloved Tv shows. Cosplay is also seen in primary Japanese culture and fashion.

Coming of age ceremonies have been held in Japan since at least Ad 714, when a young prince got new clothes and a hairstyle to mark their passage into adulthood. The official holiday was first established in 1948, to be held each year on 15 January. In 2000, as a follow of the flourishing system, the Monday on which the Day Of coming of Age was paramount on was changed to the second Monday in January.

Japanese School Girls

Many women celebrate this day with the use of Furisode (a kimono with long sleeves that hang) and zori sandals. Since most are unable to put on a kimono by themselves due to the complexities complex in dressing in one, many select to visit a beauty salon to dress and have their hair done. A complete set of formal clothing is quite expensive, so it is usually taken from a relative or rented rather than bought for the occasion. Men sometimes wear primary costumes (for example a dark kimono with hakama), but in contemporary times many men wear formal western clothes, like a suit and a tie, more often than a primary dress.

The most recent road fashion among Japanese women is the smokey eye look. It is a sultry and sexy look that is easy to accomplish and which creates striking results. The smokey eye look has been called the little black dress of make up as it is always stylish. Smokey eyes are perfect in any place and anytime because the make up needed is not overdone and adds a little bit of difficulty and charm to a woman's look. The smokey eye make up is also beneficial for vampire Cosplay.

Fantasy and science fiction characters have became very beloved Cosplay costumes. Characters from the Star Wars, Star Trek and the Harry Potter series are some of the most beloved non-manga characters to be featured in Cosplay events. Anime cartoons such as Naruto, Bleach and Final Fantasy as well as video and computer games are also beloved characters to be made into Cosplay costumes. Akatsuki And club Xiii costumes as well as the ever beloved ShinRa were the most common costumes at conventions. Outside of conventions, the most beloved Cosplay costumes are school girl outfits and maid uniforms.

Comic books, graphic novels and fantasy movies are also a source of inspiration for Cosplayers.

However, every year while the Lunar New Year duration you cannot miss something special-a million blooms at Sentosa in Singapore.

Sentosa Flowers 2009 is again as grand as ever with award winning floral displays. I know because I was there among the thousands of visitors.

They were displayed at the Imbiah guard location and for the first time we could enjoy the floral displays heading to the sandy beach of Palawan.

The displays had some themes to go with them. Let me give you three examples.

The first example was the "Land of Blue". Here the placard read: "Across the seas to the continent of America, a brave miniature girl from Texas tells her tale of sell out where she gave up her prized possession, a blue clad doll, to appease the gods so rain would fall. in effect the rain fell, bringing forth an azure field of flowers filled with Agapanthus, Amaryllis and more."

Another placard read: "At the land of Pink, look for a sweet Japanese girl seated next to a tree, where you'll also find a feast of Japanese spring flowers such as the Daphne Odorata, Primrose Jasmine, Peony, and of policy a favourite of the Japanese, Cherry Blossoms. Daphne Odorata was named after a Greek Goddess, Daphne. This is a plant which is favoured both for its clusters of fragrant rose purple flowers, which appear in Spring."

A final example was the "Orchid Treasures" placard. It read: "Be amazed by the variety of species and cultivars of Singapore's national flower, specially flown in from Taiwan."

There was even a section on school gardening and sculpture display competition.

Under the starry nights we were captivated by the sensation of lit-up flowers.

We fully enjoyed the Sentosa Flowers 2009 floral displays and we look forward to next year's display. Won't you join me next year?

In the meantime, I would like to share with you my joy over here where I have put a slideshow with nearly 100 photos http://directoryofsingapore.com/blog/sentosa/sentosa-flowers-2009

Book chronicle - Seven Year Switch

Summer arrived in Northern California uncharacteristically late this year. Normally, the climatic characteristic soars past 100 degrees by Memorial Day, and by the time we "ooh" and "aah" over the Fourth of July fireworks display, we have enjoyed a whole of days lounging on the beach or by the pool, slow reading an engrossing novel... Or a few. This year, we didn't palpate our first 100 degree-plus scorcher until June was nearly a memory.

Fortunately, by the time our first legitimately long, hot summer day arrived, I was by the pool reading Claire Cook's seventh novel, Seven Year Switch, which received well-deserved beach read shout-outs from People, Usa Today, and the New York Times. Seven Year Switch marked the first time I read one of Claire Cook's books, although Must Love Dogs is one of my all-time popular movies. I enjoyed Seven Year Switch so much that I plan to read (and review) her previous six novels.

Japanese School Girls

Synopsis:

Jill Murray's life hasn't turned out the way she envisioned and planned it. For the past seven years, she has been raising her daughter, Anastasia, now ten years old, on her own. Her husband, Seth, suddenly abandoned them. To make ends meet, Jill teaches Lunch nearby the World cooking classes at the society center and works from home as a telephone operater for her friend Joni's voyage service. "Great Girlfriend Getaways. Feisty and fantastic man-free escapes both close to home and all over the world. When was the last time you got together with your girlfriends?" Jill greets callers in eight-hour stretches while she prepares evening meal for Anastasia, drills her on her spelling lesson, and wonders if and when her husband will reappear. Ironically, although Jill regales callers with lively details about the various available getaway packages, she hasn't enjoyed any getaways herself. And she doesn't have any girlfriends to get away with, unless you count Joni or Cynthia, her annoyingly beautiful next-door neighbor.

Jill also provides firm consulting services. A new client, Billy Sanders, needs assistance addition his line of designer bike rentals into the Japanese market. For the first time in seven years, Jill allows herself to witness more than a casual bike ride with her handsome, somewhat eccentric new client.

Naturally, Seth resurfaces just as Jill is pulling her life together and beginning to feel like her old, inescapable self again.

Review:

Jill concept she was foremost a perfectly happy life with her husband, Seth, and three-year-old daughter. Railing against the domesticity into which they have settled, Seth can't understand why Jill doesn't see that he is suffocatingly unhappy. So Seth simply walks away, leaving Jill financially and emotionally destitute, and fully responsible for raising their daughter.

In response, Jill does what any mother in those circumstances would: She figures out how to survive... Step by step, day by day. Not without anxiety. Not without worry. Not without anger and resentment toward the man she loved and she believed loved her, their child, and their life together. And not without subjugating her own needs for the sake of her daughter's. She doesn't date, she doesn't buy nice clothes for or take permissible care of herself. She can't afford to hire man to achieve disposition maintenance on the modest house she has managed to purchase in a marginal neighborhood that is on the cusp of becoming trendy.

As the story opens, it is clear that Jill has lived every day of the last seven years on a precipice -- waiting for whatever comes next. And she is understandably tired of it. But effecting convert in your life is difficult when you have a ten-year-old who is fully dependent upon you -- only you.

Cook creates fully believable main characters with whom readers can facilely identify. Anastasia, in particular, is appropriately, exasperatingly, charmingly precocious. She is ten going on thirty, as are most girls that age. Involved about what her friends will think if she lets her mother kiss her good-bye before she gets on the school bus, she longs to fit in with the other kids as she perpetually fusses with her headband and writes with a pink or purple feathery pen. She tests her mother in the ways that only a lively and cheeky ten-year-old can. Bemused, Jill had come to love Anastasia's "little acts of rebellion. I read them as signs of progress, evidence that she had not only survived, but was finally beginning to thrive. She had friends at school. Her grades were good. She loved to read." And, in Jill's estimation, "[t]he last thing whether of us needed was for Seth to come back into our lives and screw them all up again." Of course, he does.

Wisely, Cook crafts a convincing portrait of a microscopic girl poised to enter puberty who still longs for and misses her daddy. The story would have been far less satisfying had Anastasia been portrayed as a stereotypically angry, rebellious teenager and Jill the harried mother desperate to retell with an out-of-control child. Because Anastasia is ten, rather than 16 or 17, Jill's instinctual desire to protect her just a bit longer is understandable, So Jill's ethically questionable recipe of assessing her daughter's need to have her father back in her life is justifiable and, from the reader's perspective, forgivable.

What makes Cook's writing qualified and elevates Seven Year Switch from just another enjoyable story to a memorable one, is the book's hilariously authentic cast of supporting players. Like one of my all-time popular authors, Janet Evanovich, Cook injects her article with nuances and details that make the most tangential characters, even if they only appear in the story for a few brief words or paragraphs, come alive in the reader's mind just as vibrantly as those central to the story. From the opportunity paragraphs in which Cook describes Jill's eclectic menagerie of students at the society center straight through the last few chapters when the reader meets the group of women with whom Jill finally gets away to Costa Rica for a surfing adventure, every character has his/her own unique voice and is professionally positioned to drive the dialogue and plot send at a crisp clip.

Perhaps most lively is Cynthia, Jill's next-door neighbor. Cynthia wears flirty microscopic tennis outfits, has her hair and nails done regularly, is a some-time interior decorator, and owns a faultless set of the "pinkest of pink" power tools that she loans Jill in their silver and pink case resembling a "heftier version of the Barbie briefcase that Anastasia had talked me into buying her a few years ago." Jill wanted to hate Cynthia because she "oozed entitlement from every well-peeled and dermabraded pore, but I also kind of wanted to be Cynthia. Somehow I concept I'd do a best job of it." Every woman has at least one friend like Cynthia, whose life isn't quite as excellent as, at first glance, it appears. Full of puns and a few unfulfilled dreams of her own, it becomes impossible for the reader to hate her, either. By the end of the book, Cynthia becomes uproariously endearing.

The least industrialized character is Seth, but that does not detract from the story. Rather, the omission keeps the reader's concentration focused on Jill and her metamorphosis. Thankfully, Jill doesn't spend a lot of time trying to understand why Seth left her and Anastasia, even when he offers a lame explanation. His abrupt departure, reminiscent of Berger's break-up with Carrie on Sex and the City, and equally sudden reappearance, don't send Jill into continued hand-wringing, "where-did-I-fail-you?" or "how-did-I-miss-the-signs?" fits of soul-searching. The truth is that Seth is a coward and Jill is entitled to be unremorsefully furious with him for the rest of her life. But Jill is determined to be the best mother she can be and when Seth wanders back into their lives, hoping to pick up where they left off seven years before, Jill continues to elevate her daughter's needs over her own. Coward or not, Seth is Anastasia's father, after all.

Jill informs Anastasis that her father has returned, and the microscopic girl demands to speak with him immediately. Jill relates that "[i]f I'd had to take a test to define the emotions I was feeling, I would have failed miserably." Any parent who has, purely for the sake of their child, endured holidays, birthdays, and other occasions in the firm of an ex-spouse or partner when they would rather have omitted his/her from the guest list can facilely retell to Jill's dissatisfaction and jealousy when Anastasia becomes fully enchanted with the parent who has been inexcusably absent from her life. But for her daughter's sake, Jill faces the moment she has dreaded for seven years: Anastasia's reunion with her father.

I tiptoed into the living room. Anastasia was sitting on the couch, flipping straight through the album of photos of Seth.

"Hey," I whispered. "How did it go?"

She smiled up at me. "We're having a welcome home party. I'm going to make the decorations, and Dad's going to bring the presents. What do you want to do?"

I looked at her. I twisted my mouth into a smile.

Scream, I thought. While the daughter and the father plan their reunion, what the mother wants to do is scream.

It is said that every seven years one becomes a fully new person. The dramatic tension in Cook's story emanates from Jill's being forced to settle if she wants to revert to the man she was seven years ago when her world was turned upside down by Seth's departure, or reinvent herself. With Seth's return, things cannot remain as they have been for the past seven years as she and Anastasia found their way together. Jill loved Seth but she has to settle if she still loves him or can love him again, despite what he did. Now that he has been reintroduced to Anastasia, he will remain a part of both of their lives. And there is Billy, with whom Jill has tentatively embarked upon a refreshing new relationship. A surprising twist causes her to query whether she can continue her pro or personal connection with Billy.

Jill is the "everywoman" in this piece. Every parent who reads Seven Year Switch best buckle up before reading the first page because he/she is going on an emotional roller coaster ride along with Jill. It is impossible not to empathize with Jill's heartbreak at looking her daughter long for her absent father and, when he resurfaces, her desire to shield Anastasia as she thrusts herself headlong into a renewed connection with him. (What if he hurts them again?) It is easy to appreciate why Jill, humiliated and embarrassed, isolated herself from her friends, and threw her full energy and concentration into raising her daughter after being rejected so emphatically and cruelly by an outwardly loving husband. And every woman who has girlfriends upon whom she relies for companionship, honesty, and unconditional keep will rejoice when Jill finally acknowledges that she deserves her own Great Girlfriend Getaway. Every great book boasts at least one character with whom the readers recognize and for whom they cheer. In Seven Year Switch, that character is Jill.

Seven Year Switch is finally an exploration of what it means to be selfless and forgiving, while safeguarding one's own emotional boundaries, along with those of the habitancy who depend upon us for care and protection. Few habitancy will find themselves in a situation as unusual as having a spouse return after going missing for seven years, but readers will retell to Jill's measurement to do what is best for her daughter, as well as the morass of unresolved feelings Jill must sort straight through as she struggles to descry what comes next in her life - and her child's. The pages of Seven Year Switch flip quickly, but its theme and characters resonate long after the book has been put back into the beach tote with the sunscreen, sunflower seeds, and extra towels while the reader contemplates the incoming tide. It is, as Allison Winn Scotch, author of The One That I Want observed, "a excellent beach read," sure to come to be a summertime classic!

Timothy goes to school - timothys way

Timothy goes to school - timothys way Tube. Duration : 4.07 Mins.

TIMOTHY GOES TO SCHOOL Check my blog at: timothygoestoschooluk.blogspot.co.uk The students at Hilltop School are varied. Charles is a shy bunny; Doris a large beaver; others include exciting characters like Lilly, Charles, Doris, Timothy, Yoko as the rest of the students at Hilltop school! Careful though, some of them are bullies, like Claud and Grace! Below are the characters split up into three groups, children, adults, and others. Timothy is a raccoon. Although he is the main character of the show, not all episodes are centered on him. He is a well-meaning young boy and the most warm hearted child in the school, generally trying to be a friend to everyone. He is a little impulsive however, as seen in "Red Thunder," when he unsuccessfully tries to copy Doris's brothers on a bicycle ramp. Yoko is a cat from Japan. She is a typical sweet young girl, good at the violin and seeing the best in people. Yoko enjoys many Japanese things such as sushi and origami which has occasionally caused problems for her and her classmates. She is Timothy's best friend, and they are often seen together. Nora is a mouse who is somewhat bossy and sulky sometimes. She is known for making a lot of noise which has earned her the nickname Noisy Nora. She owns an iguana called Norman who lives in the school. She has an eight-year old sister named Kate who hasn't appeared in the show other than as a picture Nora drew of her, and an extremely messy baby brother named Jack who occasionally appears ...

Dare Mo Shiranai (Nobody Knows)

Starring: Yûya Yagira, Ayu Kitaura, Hiei Kimura

Written and directed by: Hirokazu Kore-eda

Japanese School Girls

'She doesn't fit.'

'Guess Yuki grew.'

This dinky known gem of a movie is an unflinching, poignant portrayal of a true incident, which happened in Japan in 1988, where a young mum left her four underage children alone in a cramped Tokyo apartment for an extended period. These children, born of separate fathers, who had never gone to school, had to fend for themselves and survive.

inIn the first shot, we see the eldest kid, Akira traveling on the subway, with a suitcase in the middle of his legs. Then it cuts to the mum appealing into a new apartment with Akira and two large suitcases. Once the packers leave, the first suitcase is opened and out pops an adorable dinky 5-year old girl, Yuki. Next to emerge is a panting 7-year old Shige-monster. Then Shigeru runs off to the railway station to get his sister, Kyoko. Her first request is about the washing machine. Over dinner, they are handed over a set of rules, no screaming, no loud noises, no going outside, not even the verandah. And so they are located into a new home with umpteenth promises of a new and best life from their mother.

But soon, she gets a new boyfriend, who is 'sweet and serious'. She tells Akira that it's the real deal this time...and disappears with the guy leaving Akira, a small envelope of cash. She reappears once more, long after the money has run out, with gifts for the kids The same day, she packs up and leaves again promising to return for Christmas.

Days turn into weeks; weeks turn into months...the living conditions go from decent to bearable to horrific.

Even in this risky situation, the kids manage to find dinky slivers of joy in planting seeds in empty noodle cups, in having a bath at the tap in a park, in doodling and fooling around, in doing anyone kids do. (With the risk of digressing, in this respect their situation brings to mind the story of Apu and Durga from Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali, how they learn to make their own toys and find their own dinky treasures.)

While the older kids Akira and Kyoko understand, Yuki and Shigeru keep hoping for the return of their mother.

On Yuki's birthday, in a appealing sequence, Akira takes her exterior the house to the station to 'receive mom'. After waiting for a few hours they start walking back. They stop and look at a train rushing by. The train goes to Haneda, where the planes are...Akira promises Yuki that he would take her to see the planes one day. He fulfills his promise...but only after their situation has reached its obvious tragic end.

The mum played by Japanese popstar, You, is not depicted as an unfeeling, callous monster of a parent. She herself is a child-woman, who can't help but lurch from one misstep to the next in her life, dragging her children along.

Akira is played by 12-year old Yuya Yagira in a marvelous and understated performance. He won the best actor at Cannes'04 for this role.

He is the one in charge, who has to assume responsibility. He tries his best but you can see the desperation creeping in gradually. He himself is only a kid...he tries to make friends...but fails miserably...the look on his face when he gets to play a real game of baseball with other kids speaks volumes expressing his suppressed desires to live a general life, to be a kid for once.

In this movie, the director Hirokazu Kore-eda has presented a less grim version of the actual events. And the sensitive understatement, the absolute refusal to sensationalize the story transforms the record into something unique- a delicate and touching existential tale.

Kokeshi Dolls: A Toy or a Japanese Tradition?

At first sight, kokeshi dolls may seem like easy toys or decorations for your living room, but in fact they are an necessary art form in Japan. These dolls are generally characterized by their lack of legs and arms (some contemporary designs have simplified arms), along with their colored kimono with floral patterns and geometric shapes.

These Japanese dolls ordinarily symbolize young girls and they rapidly became familiar for their representation of feminine beauty. These Japanese dolls are ordinarily female, although male versions are currently becoming more common. These wonderfully man-made dolls are viewed as tokens of good wishes and love.

Japanese School Girls

The History Behind Kokeshi dolls

In the early nineteenth century within the northern villages of the Tohoku region, kokeshi dolls were man-made as toys for children, and they were produced from remaining bits of discarded wood. These early Japanese dolls were created by craftsmen who made their living by manufacture other forms of woodcraft, but at some point they began creating kokeshi dolls to be marketed as souvenirs. There were many local hot spring resorts in the area, so it was a good firm to sell these dolls to the visitors; it is a Japanese tradition to take back home an omiyage (a gift that is brought back home when a person travels). Over the years, this art has been enhanced and a wide collection of technical and artistic variations appeared. Today, there are many schools of kokeshi designs guided by devotee craftsmen who pass their inheritance to other house members, maintaining this tradition throughout the generations.

Kokeshi Doll Types

Regardless of their tasteless characteristics, kokeshi dolls are separated into two proper types: primary kokeshi and creative kokeshi

Traditional Kokeshi

Traditional kokeshi dolls were initially man-made by Kijiya artisans in the Tohoku region. They were known as "dento" dolls and they had slim and long bodies without arms or legs, and wider rounded heads. Initially, these Japanese dolls took a very easy shape with long cylindrical bodies painted with a little collection of colors.

Modern Kokeshi

Shingata or creative kokeshi, is a more contemporary doll style which gives flexibility to the artist to shape the doll as he chooses; they can possess any style or color. Also, the body and head can be very diverse in form. Creative kokeshi dolls don't cleave to the primary styles originated in the Tohoku region; their creation is totally free regarding the artwork. A creative doll is generally a unique piece, and it might be more precious compared to other type of dolls due to its originality. The craftsmen who furnish the creative kokeshi dolls are not from a particular region of Japan, and typically they are settled in the cities.

These dolls have been an prominent part of the Japanese traditions and nowadays they are an icon of Japanese culture. The charm behind these dolls lies in their ever changing make that reflects the current Japanese society. easy and stylish, these dolls are not just toys or decorations; they are an expression of dedication and love to an art form that has been present for hundreds of years in Japan.

The increasing of vending engine toys and toy capsules can be useful to any candy, gumball, or other vending engine business. Toys such as pencil toppers, animals, charms, football helmets, rings, excite the girls and boys alike, they inspire their imaginations, and the kids are drawn to the vending machines that highlight the popular toys. Sometimes, the toys can be worn and the kids love to show off and be extra and distinct from the other kids in school and at the collective events. So what are the origins of the most popular vending capsules? These are the top three vending toys: The Toy Entrepreneurs, the Hollywood Storytellers, and the Japanese Inventors. Let's see the examples of vending toys advent out of these three sources.

The Toy Entrepreneurs: Silly Bands

Japanese School Girls

Take the Us business out of Ohio, Brainchild Products. They just recently invented the Silly Bandz brand of shaped silicone bracelets. What they have seen in just months after launching, is an thinkable, inquire for such bracelets across the nation. The kids love them. They get them, trade them, envy them. Then, the parents are not far behind. Under pressure from the kids, they will do anything to get their kids hands on Silly Bandz. The huge inquire swiftly sprouted a whole of copycats such as Funky-Bandz, Zanybandz, Logo Bandz, Doodle Bandz, Rubba Bandz, Goofy Bands, Bama Bandz, and Stretchy Fun Bands. There is just no end to what shapes the silicone wrist bands can come in. Parents gave up on the names and refer to all shaped silicone bands simply as "silly bands".

The Hollywood Storytellers

Every time a script makes it to the movie, the main characters are made into celebrities. They appear everywhere, on billboards, on Tv, in movie theaters, bookstores, they come with your happy meal, and last but not least they will appear as toys in toy vending machines. Due to the thinkable, marketing engine behind each Hollywood movie, the recognition factor for Hollywood movie based figurines and toys is tremendous. Kids will at once identify the toys or toy capsules and will be drawn to them.

The Japanese Inventors: Squishies Pencil Toppers

The latest toy capsules vending craze advent out of Japan is small but innovative in a typical Japanese style. They are called Squishies Pencil Toppers and they are microscopic silicone toys that can be attached on top of kids pencils to liven them up. Squishies come as squishy animals, squishy humans, squishy bugs and spiders, squishy frogs and squishy fish. Some come as light up squishies and they light up when squeezed!

12 Recommendable Sports Movies - Sporty Dozen

Bend It Like Beckham (2002.)
17 years old girl from primary Sikh family residing in England eagerly wants to play football, just like her idol, David Beckham... The first think to watch this comedy drama is adorable Parminder Nagra ('Er'), with whom you will identify at the first glance. Second and third reasons are incredibly cute Keira Knightley ('Pirates of the Caribbean') and equally hot Jonathan Rhys Meyers ('The Tudors'). Oh, and there are abundance of great songs throughout.

The Big Blue/Le Grand Bleu (1988.)
Two friends who share a passion for the dangerous sport of free diving, compete against each other in a free diving contest... Visually striking advendure drama, directed by Luc Besson ('Fifth Element') and filmed on beautiful locations at Mediterranean Sea. Starring Jean-Marc Barr ('Le Divorce') and Jean Reno ('Crimson Rivers').

Japanese School Girls

Blades Of Glory (2007.)
Being banned from the Olympics, two ice skaters find the loophole that allows them to compete as same-sex pairs team... Sounds hilarious? Well it is! Comedy spoof worth watching for surprising jokes and delirious performances by two main actors, Will Ferell ('The Other Guys') and Jon Heder ('Napoleon Dynamite').

The Blind Side (2009.)
Caring middle-class woman helps homeless teenager, a friend of her son, to become successful All American football player... Even if you're not interested in American football, you will enjoy this drama based on true events. Marvelous Sandra Bullock ('The Proposal') shines in important role which brought her many awards, together with the most important one - Oscar.

Cool Runnings (1993.)
Four bobsledders from Jamaica are trying to make it to the Winter Olympics, lead by coach who was once connected to cheating scandal... Comedy about bobsledders who never even saw a snow (!), loosely based on true story, celebrates 'never-give-up' spirit and features probably the best role in a work of a late comedian John Candy ('Planes, Trains and Automobiles').

Enter The Dragon (1973.)
A martial art specialist is recruited by group to spy on a crime lord, using his invitation to a kung fu tournament as cover... A true classic! The first Chinese martial arts film to have been produced by a major Hollywood studio. Of course, it's impossible not to mention legendary important actor Bruce Lee ('Fist of Fury') who tragically died shortly afterwards the filming.

Jerry Maguire (1996.)
Fired sports agent is struggling to keep his clients with the withhold of his ex-colleague - particular mom who's conspiratorially in love with him... Tom Cruise ('Knight and Day') and Renée Zellweger ('Bridget Jones's Diary') share a quite good chemistry in this Cameron Crowe's ('Almost Famous') comedy drama, but it's Cuba Gooding Jr. ('American Gangster'), playing football star, who delivers the most memorable line in the movie - 'Show me the money!'

The Karate Kid (1984.)
New kid in town, being bullied at school, befriends a Japanese janitor, martial art master, who promises to teach him karate... Yes, I know there's a up-to-date remake of this movie, but primary take of this adolescent melodrama deservedly has a credit of a cult classic. Slim Ralph Macchio played the role of a high school teenager so convincingly, I was surprised to find out he was 23 at the time! Unforgettable line? 'Wax on...wax off. Wax on... Wax off.'

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India (2001.)
Central India in 1893. British officer, who has imposed high taxes (lagaan) on habitancy from the local villages offers a bet: if their community team beats a British team in a game of cricket, their taxes for 3 years will be cancelled... This epic musical, one of the most praised Bollywood movie worldwide, is a good composition of against-all-odds story, enjoyable soundtrack and charming performances by Aamir Khan ('Rang De Basanti') and Gracy Singh ('Loudspeaker').

Million Dollar Baby (2004.)
Aging boxing coach, troubled by his past, agrees to train amateur female boxer who's dreaming of becoming a professional... Hilary Swank ('Conviction') was initially shocked when legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood ('Gran Torino') offered her the important role in this controversial drama, but she justified his trust by excellent operation which brought her the Academy Award for the best actress!

Point Break (1991.)
On his undercover mission, Fbi agent infiltrates the surfing gang, trying to prove that surfers committed series of a bank robberies... Although movie plot sounds like a good material for a parody, it is as a matter of fact performance thriller, directed by Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker'). The main attraction of 'Point Break', beside performance sequences, are two hot actors - Keanu Reeves ('Matrix' trilogy) and late Patrick Swayze ('Ghost'), here at the peak of his career.

The Wrestler (2008.)
Retired wrestler is trying to reconcile with his estranged daughter while inspecting the comeback that could kill him... Marvelous drama directed by Darren Aronofsky ('Requiem For a Dream') will touch your heart even if you don't care about wrestling. Due to a low-budget of the movie, Mickey Rourke ('Sin City') waived his fee, but nevertheless delivered the best operation of his career, playing a character that was very much like himself.

Taiping's patrimony Trail

The town of Taiping in Malaysia means "Eternal Peace" and is Perak State's prominent historic town. It is placed 80 km from Ipoh, the State capital. Formerly, known as Larut, the town was in the midst of a bloody feud in the middle of Chinese private societies who worked the lucrative tin mines in the 1870's. After peace was declared in the middle of the feuding parties in 1874, the town changed to its present name. Before the founding of Kuala Lumpur in the south, Taiping prospered for several decades, scoring a whole of firsts: first museum in the country, first English newspaper; first swimming pool. Today, it is chock-a block with heritage buildings.

Exploring the town is easy as its main roads -- Jalan Stesyen, Jalan Taming Sari, Jalan Pasar, Jalan Kota -- run parallel, and are criss-crossed with small ones. An perfect starting point for a walkabout tour is the Post & Telegraph Office at Jalan Stesyen. Built in 1884 and featuring buttresses on its walls, this construction was built in 1884 and bears the disagreement of being the first post office of the Federated Malay States. (The term Federated Malay States refers to a grouping of states ruled by British Residents while the 1890's). Now, lope southward to the pitched-roofed Town Rest House that was built in 1894. Rich in colourful history, this rest house has once played host to past rajas and colonial officials.

Japanese School Girls

Twenty metres additional south, the ruddy brickwork of King Edward Vii School peeps through the foliage of angsana trees. Tudor arches and wide verandahs are the hallmarks of this construction that was built in 1905. while the Japanese occupation (1942-45), the dreaded Kempetai (Japanese troops police) used the school as their headquarters. Classrooms were converted into torture chambers and its grounds were turned into vegetable plots to provide food for soldiers. Strolling southward about a hundred paces takes you to the Ceylon association on the other side of the road. An unassuming construction of brick and wood, it was constructed in 1899. The next heritage construction greeting you at the end of Jalan Stesyen is St. George's Institution, built in 1928. The wall of its grounds floor is adorned with friezes. while the Japanese Occupation, the construction doubled as a Japanese school and a Japanese officers' hotel.

To continue the tour, turn left and lope to the end of Jalan Taming Sari; then make a hairpin turn into Jalan Kota. As you lope northward along this road, look out for the Hokkien association was built in 1931. This construction was the clan-house of the early settlers who migrated from Fujian province in China while that era. Someone else fifty metres additional on at the junction of Jalan Masjid and Jalan Kota stands Old Mosque (Masjid Lama). Harking back to 1897, it features a six-sided façade and a brick wall enclosure. Its grounds comprise the mausoleum of a Muslim scholar named Sheikh Makhbuli.

After passing the Old Mosque, turn right at the first junction to head to Jalan Idris and lope to construction No. 2 , which is the Peking Hotel. Once the premises of Taiping's rubber dealers association, it was built in 1929 and displays trefoil arches and narrow vertical windows.

Backtrack to Jalan Kota and head north. Near the junction of Jalan Kota and Jalan Iskandar, turn left to get to tree-lined Jalan Pasar. Resembling a temple, the unassuming Tseng Lung Hakka association still stands proudly since its construction in 1887. From here, you can already see the Taiping market ahead. Truly relics of a bygone era, it consists of two buildings: Old market and New Market. The former was built in 1884; the latter, 1885. Made of ironwood timber, it is protected by an iron roof.

From Jalan Pasar, get back to Jalan Kota to see the Police Station. A former timber construction constructed in 1881, the present structure was completed in 1936. It is topped with a fortified clock tower, and also doubled as a fire station. In fact, the first fire brigade of the Federated Malay States was based here. lope to Jalan Sultan Abdullah where a well-preserved construction at No. 19 is busy by Guan Chin Han, a trading company. In the 1930's, the construction was really a cigar factory built by a Burmese merchant who brought in women from Burma to roll tobacco into cigars. while the Japanese Occupation, it functioned as a storage for troops supplies.

At Jalan Tokong stands the Cantonese association and Temple for the Immortal Girl within a tasteless compound. Founded in 1887, the association was set up to sustain the interests of early migrants from Kwangtung province in China. Its front courtyard is guarded by a pair of lions which were installed in 1954 when the construction was renovated. Inside the same compound, Temple for the Immortal Girl is dedicated to the deity Ho Sien-ku Miao. It dates back to the 1940's.

Turning right into Jalan Kota, you are now at the outskirt of the town prominent to the Lake Gardens. At the end of Jalan Kota, the public Library is housed in a white-washed construction with a pillared porch. Constructed in 1882, it was the former premises of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, which later became standard Chartered Bank.

A slow twenty minutes' roam from here brings you to Jalan Esplande which joins Jalan Kelab Baru. At Jalan Esplanade, near the base of a hillock are two Chinese tombstones that date back to mid-1800's. They are the remnants of a Chinese cemetery once found at the foot of the hillock. Atop the hillock stands the District Officer's residence. Built in 1890's, it was once the home of the Secretary to British Resident.

After the District Officer's residence, continue for Someone else ten minutes to British Officers' Mess. A right turn leads to Jalan Taming Sari where the All Saints Church is situated. Founded in 1886, it is the first Anglican Church in the Federated Malay States.
