12 Recommendable Sports Movies - Sporty Dozen

Bend It Like Beckham (2002.)
17 years old girl from primary Sikh family residing in England eagerly wants to play football, just like her idol, David Beckham... The first think to watch this comedy drama is adorable Parminder Nagra ('Er'), with whom you will identify at the first glance. Second and third reasons are incredibly cute Keira Knightley ('Pirates of the Caribbean') and equally hot Jonathan Rhys Meyers ('The Tudors'). Oh, and there are abundance of great songs throughout.

The Big Blue/Le Grand Bleu (1988.)
Two friends who share a passion for the dangerous sport of free diving, compete against each other in a free diving contest... Visually striking advendure drama, directed by Luc Besson ('Fifth Element') and filmed on beautiful locations at Mediterranean Sea. Starring Jean-Marc Barr ('Le Divorce') and Jean Reno ('Crimson Rivers').

Blades Of Glory (2007.)
Being banned from the Olympics, two ice skaters find the loophole that allows them to compete as same-sex pairs team... Sounds hilarious? Well it is! Comedy spoof worth watching for surprising jokes and delirious performances by two main actors, Will Ferell ('The Other Guys') and Jon Heder ('Napoleon Dynamite').

The Blind Side (2009.)
Caring middle-class woman helps homeless teenager, a friend of her son, to become successful All American football player... Even if you're not interested in American football, you will enjoy this drama based on true events. Marvelous Sandra Bullock ('The Proposal') shines in important role which brought her many awards, together with the most important one - Oscar.

Cool Runnings (1993.)
Four bobsledders from Jamaica are trying to make it to the Winter Olympics, lead by coach who was once connected to cheating scandal... Comedy about bobsledders who never even saw a snow (!), loosely based on true story, celebrates 'never-give-up' spirit and features probably the best role in a work of a late comedian John Candy ('Planes, Trains and Automobiles').

Enter The Dragon (1973.)
A martial art specialist is recruited by group to spy on a crime lord, using his invitation to a kung fu tournament as cover... A true classic! The first Chinese martial arts film to have been produced by a major Hollywood studio. Of course, it's impossible not to mention legendary important actor Bruce Lee ('Fist of Fury') who tragically died shortly afterwards the filming.

Jerry Maguire (1996.)
Fired sports agent is struggling to keep his clients with the withhold of his ex-colleague - particular mom who's conspiratorially in love with him... Tom Cruise ('Knight and Day') and Renée Zellweger ('Bridget Jones's Diary') share a quite good chemistry in this Cameron Crowe's ('Almost Famous') comedy drama, but it's Cuba Gooding Jr. ('American Gangster'), playing football star, who delivers the most memorable line in the movie - 'Show me the money!'

The Karate Kid (1984.)
New kid in town, being bullied at school, befriends a Japanese janitor, martial art master, who promises to teach him karate... Yes, I know there's a up-to-date remake of this movie, but primary take of this adolescent melodrama deservedly has a credit of a cult classic. Slim Ralph Macchio played the role of a high school teenager so convincingly, I was surprised to find out he was 23 at the time! Unforgettable line? 'Wax on...wax off. Wax on... Wax off.'

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India (2001.)
Central India in 1893. British officer, who has imposed high taxes (lagaan) on habitancy from the local villages offers a bet: if their community team beats a British team in a game of cricket, their taxes for 3 years will be cancelled... This epic musical, one of the most praised Bollywood movie worldwide, is a good composition of against-all-odds story, enjoyable soundtrack and charming performances by Aamir Khan ('Rang De Basanti') and Gracy Singh ('Loudspeaker').

Million Dollar Baby (2004.)
Aging boxing coach, troubled by his past, agrees to train amateur female boxer who's dreaming of becoming a professional... Hilary Swank ('Conviction') was initially shocked when legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood ('Gran Torino') offered her the important role in this controversial drama, but she justified his trust by excellent operation which brought her the Academy Award for the best actress!

Point Break (1991.)
On his undercover mission, Fbi agent infiltrates the surfing gang, trying to prove that surfers committed series of a bank robberies... Although movie plot sounds like a good material for a parody, it is as a matter of fact performance thriller, directed by Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker'). The main attraction of 'Point Break', beside performance sequences, are two hot actors - Keanu Reeves ('Matrix' trilogy) and late Patrick Swayze ('Ghost'), here at the peak of his career.

The Wrestler (2008.)
Retired wrestler is trying to reconcile with his estranged daughter while inspecting the comeback that could kill him... Marvelous drama directed by Darren Aronofsky ('Requiem For a Dream') will touch your heart even if you don't care about wrestling. Due to a low-budget of the movie, Mickey Rourke ('Sin City') waived his fee, but nevertheless delivered the best operation of his career, playing a character that was very much like himself.
