What You Don't Know About Cameron Highlands

Hello and "apa khabar?"- or "How are you?" in Malay. Are you ready to visit Cameron Highlands? I conjecture you might be a miniature cold once you get here, so I hope you brought a sweater along. Jogging or running shoes would be helpful if you intend to walk on some of the notable jungle trails.

Before we start, let's get to know the area.

Japanese School Girls

Cameron Highlands is in the, well, highland area, about 121 kilometres east of Ipoh and about 214 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur. It is situated in Malaysia's largest peninsula state- the state of Pahang. Standing at 5,000 feet or 1,500 metres above sea level, it the top area on the mainland. Cameron Highlands enjoys a rather cool climate compared to Kuala Lumpur, with temperatures of 25 °C but rarely falling below 12°C. It may not be very cold to some of you, but in hot and humid Malaysia, it is pretty cold.

So what's the story behind Cameron Highlands?

The French writer Henri Fauconnier wonderfully described the tropics in Malaya when he wrote his best selling book, "The Soul of Malaya." By the way, Malaya is the old name for Malaysia. In the book, he observed, "In Malaya, the seasons are hardly distinct. You do not die a miniature every year, as in Europe at the end of autumn. You cease to think of date or time."

But the British who were in Malaya at the time found this to be extremely monotonous and decided to seek areas where they could get away from the tropical heat. Mental of forms of escape, they ended up heading to the cool mountains up here. This place was a great vacation spot, away from the hustle and bustle of city life and away from diseases such as malaria and dysentery.

Where did Cameron Highlands get its name? Well, thanks to one government surveyor named William Cameron who stumbled upon this the mountain range in all its mossy glory back in 1885. He described the newly found area as 'a fine plateau with diplomatic slopes, shut in by lofty mountains'. If you think this is a miniature too over poetic, you'll soon find it to be an understatement, but I'll leave you to seek that.

So while William Cameron was the one who found this place- there was one tiny problem. William Cameron forgot where it was. So, the British administrator at that time, Sir Hugh Low, made a few expeditions after that and ultimately put Cameron Highlands on the map.

Cameron Highlands became a hit to those who got tired of Fraser's Hill, a less favorite highland area in Malaya at the time. Fraser's Hill was considered too small, too cramped and it had unsuitable conditions for growing produce. This is good news to Cameron Highlands. The government at the time soon began to focus their interest here. After they cleared the forests, the tea planters came in droves to claim the land nearby Cameron Highlands for their plantations. Chinese farmers also arrived to plant their vegetables and produce. Shops began to spring up to cater to the needs of the new and growing community.

Alright. That's the short history of Cameron Highlands.

Sights

Before we move on to the sights in and nearby Cameron Highlands, you should know that there are a few distinct towns in the area. After all, we're talking about a very big area here. If you have visited Singapore, it is approximately two and a quarter times the size of Singapore.

And here are the towns:

Firstly, we have Brinchang (spell it out), which is the biggest town in Cameron Highlands. Here you can find some hotels, night markets, a troops camp, banks and a commercial area. Further up is Tringkap (spell it out), the enterprise centre of Cameron Highlands, which is well-known for its stalls and shops. Here, you can get vegetable, fruits and flowers that arrive daily and fresh from the farms. In fact, some traders from Kuala Lumpur no ifs ands or buts tour all the way up here every day to bring some back to Kuala Lumpur, as the wholesale price here is ridiculously cheap! Look out for shops selling roses for as miniature as 3 Ringgit for 10 stalks and a whole bag of vegetables for 2 Ringgit. It's right on a steal at these prices. Next is Ringlet (spell it out), the very first stop if you come headed from Tapah, and is also notable for its vegetable farms. There's also a flower farm too. an additional one big town in the area is Tanah Rata (spell it out). Similarly like Brinchang, it has become one of the major towns in Cameron Highlands where it hosts some hotels, parks and a commercial centre. For those of you who love your coffee and well-known brand logos, there's even a Starbucks here! Next up is Bertam Valley (spell it out) that has yet an additional one favorite local vegetable farm, and an international flower farm which has flowers such as roses and chrysanthemums. And ultimately the Blue Valley, and it should be at the top of your itinerary, where the Boh Tea Plantation and the Blue Valley Plantation are.

You're probably getting the drift now- there are a lot of vegetable and flower farms in Cameron Highlands. And of course, tea plantations.

Ok now that you're somewhat well-known with the names of the major towns here, let's move along to some of the prominent and sharp attractions in Cameron Highlands. Before that, get acquainted with a young man by the name of John Archibald 'Archie' Russell. Russell arrived in Malaya in 1890 at the tender age of seven with his father. He had arrived here when Kuala Lumpur was just starting to take shape as the country's most prominent administrative centre. Russell grew up among a society of English tin miners and planters. At a young age, he found his niche in enterprise and this saw him acquiring at least a third of Ipoh town.

However, it was in 1927 when he found his true calling to grow and sell selected ability tea. When he visited Cameron Highlands, he found the rolling hills and valleys with their sufficient rainfall very ideal for tea planting. Soon, the first Boh plantation was established and today continues to serve more than 60 percent of the Malaysian tea market. It is the biggest local tea producer, face a total of 8,000 acres of land in Palas, Farlie, Bukit Cheeding and Ringlet. Boh gets its distinctive name from Bohlia, the origin of the tea that comes from the Szechuan province of China.

You can get to the plantation's Sungai Palas estate, which can be found north of Brinchang. Signboards can be seen on the way, so it is not difficult to find it. There you can sit down and have a nice cup of tea with scones and strawberry jam, while finding out to the magnificent tea plantation. It's no ifs ands or buts a breathtaking experience. Just ask for the Sungai Palas Plantation. Most habitancy will know where it is.

While you are here, do check out the free tour that takes visitors nearby the factory. Guides will show you the assorted stages of tea production. There you will see some of the machines that are still in pristine conditions, despite being from the 1930s. Even some of the actual tea bushes from then are still nearby as they can be harvested for as long as a hundred years before they are ultimately chopped off.

After the tour, feel free to walk nearby the plantation or head off to the plantation's tea shop. Here you can buy some of Malaysia's best teas. The Boh enterprise is still kept in the family.

That's all for the tea plantation and I hope you will have a great time there sipping tea like the British did.

The next place on the tour is the old Lakehouse in Ringlet, built by one Colonel Stanley Jack Forster. The Colonel joined the British Army when he was but a young lad, with a taste for adventure in the Far East. While most servicemen left the tropics for good after they had served their time in Malaya, the Colonel stayed back after the war. Perhaps it was his way of saying that he wanted adventure till the very end of his life.

The Colonel would carry a cane or whip with which he used to chase the locals away when they came into his property. This of course didn't expand to his choice of partners, which according to local gossip, were the very locals he used to chase away! Strange man. Though a miniature eccentric, he is widely remembered for construction the Lakehouse, which he, with great pride, built his dream bed and breakfast. His plans to build this model motel brought him to Kuala Lumpur where he would recovery roof tiles from an old, rundown hospital. The Colonel even went as far as to compose some of the woodwork items in his dream motel. These consist of a few chairs as well as the chandelier in the foyer.

There was an additional one odd thing about the old Colonel. He would screen his guests to see if he liked them or not. If they were found 'suitable' as a guest, then any invite any way absurd would be entertained. But if found 'unsuitable', not even large sums of money would convince the Colonel to let out a room!

The Colonel eventually passed away in 1984. The Hpl Hotels and Resorts now owns his dream motel, so don't worry if you will pass the Colonel's inspection. Most of the hotel has been left as the Colonel intended it to be. It continues to sit on a hill finding very much like the cozy bungalow that was in the Colonel's mind. The Lakehouse is an prominent part of Cameron Highland's history as it remains as one of the few colonial houses in Malaysia that no ifs ands or buts cater to the public. Stepping into its foyer brings the feeling of Old England. I hope you will have a chance to stay at this hotel. However, I must warn you- it does come with a fairly big price tag.

Another historic construction is Bala's Holiday Chalet. Bala's Holiday Chalet used to be a school for children of expats. The stories of Bala's Chalet have one permanent and prominent fixture, Miss Anne Laugharne Phillips Griffith- Jones. Miss Griff as she was fondly known, came to visit her brother in Singapore. She enjoyed Singapore so much that she decided to stay on after the end of her preliminary three-month tour. She began helping her brother O.P's sister in law run a school that served the expatriate society in Singapore, and later opened her own Tanglin Day School. While not trained in the profession, she made it her occupation not only to teach, but to take on the accountability for providing the best instruction for young ladies living in colonial Malaya and Singapore. Eventually, at her brother's suggestion, she opened an additional one branch right here in Cameron Highlands. Then, Cameron Highlands was just starting to compose and soon developed a reputation for being the place to go to for excessive drinking and female company.

The Second World War broke out and reinforcements were sent to Malaya to protect the Crown's stakes. Young army officers would often visit the highlands for the weekend. A miniature too often. The preliminary conjecture was that the highlands were a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. But it soon became apparent that it was Miss Griff's young female students that were the source of attraction. So much for the heat.

During the Japanese occupation, much of this came to an end as Miss Griff was tossed into the infamous Changi prison. eventually she was released, and prolonged to teach students right after the war.

The owners of Bala's chalets have retained much of the primary buildings with very miniature changes, and it remains one of the best places to stay in Cameron Highlands. It continues to serve tea and scones like Miss Griff used to for her girls.

But the most sharp tale about Cameron Highlands is that of Jim Thompson. You can still hear the habitancy of Cameron Highlands talk about it even until today. This story takes place at the Moonlight villa, which is on the way from the Strawberry Park Farm and the Lutheran Mission Bungalow. Thompson was an American architect and previously a member of the Cia. He was the one who helped revitalize Thailand's silk enterprise and for that, he was called the 'Thai Silk King.'

On Easter Sunday on March 26th, 1967, Thompson went for a pre-dinner walk as he all the time did. But on that fateful day, he was never to be seen again.

Locals and quest parties and even local shamans were enlisted to find Thompson. But oddly, despite enlisting even the most experienced trekkers from nearby tribal villages, there was just no sign of the man. Not a single narrative or clothing, or shoe, or remains were ever found. He naturally vanished into thin air. Rumours of course ran wild and some believed he was kidnapped or dragged off by a tiger. Some said that he planned his own disappearance. Others say he was kidnapped for his previous involvement in spying activities. And the most sharp one- he fell into an aborigine animal trap that is basically a pit with spikes, and the aborigines buried his body when they discovered what happened. This mysterious disappearance even inspired some books to be written about it, speculating on why and how he vanished. There has also been rumours that he has been sighted a merge of times after his death.

Food

While Cameron Highlands is not a food haven, the one thing you must try is the steamboat. It is a soup dish with noodles, seafood and an assortment of ingredients. You have a hot pot of boiling soup and you just put in anything ingredient you like and there you have it- a hot, soupy meal in the cool highlands. Steamboat is very favorite with locals and tourists alike and I would strongly advise trying it.

I don't think you'll be doing a lot of grocery shopping here but if you're finding for herbs, honey and rare potted plants, you can get some from the orang asli or indigenous habitancy who live in the jungles nearby. You will also find assorted stalls and shops selling flowers, vegetables and fruits. Do walk nearby and enjoy some strawberries, or buy yourself some fragrant and beautiful flowers! Also, if you're finding for fresh honey, you will find them easily. There are also some shops selling beautiful handcrafts made by the indigenous people.

Trail Walking

One of the best things to do here at Cameron Highlands is trail walking. Really, it's one of the most enjoyable things to do here.

Here are a few trails you can consider. Before you start, these are items you should bring with you - a light sweater, a raincoat in case of rain, binoculars for bird watching, Perhaps a small first aid kit and sensible trekking shoes that articulate their grip on wet ground. This is prominent because the ground tends to be wet in the highlands, due to the mist.

The locals used these trails back in those days and they are now preserved for the traveler and avid trekker. You should exertion these trails in the morning, just to be safe as it gets dark quite early here and losing your way is not a rare occurrence. At a few trails you can no ifs ands or buts hire guides. As always, acquaint the hotel staff and the police and friends when you embark on a trek. If you do get lost, the local police will seek help from the aborigines since they know the roads well. However, you must take strong security measures. You don't want to end up like poor Jim Thompson. Although, you can take one of his favourite Trail which is Trail estimate 4.

Trekking in Cameron Highlands is one of the most sharp experiences. Because it is placed on the spine of the Titiwangsa Range, it offers you some of the most exotic flora and fauna.

Let's start at with the trails. They are numbered 1 to 9.

Trail 1 leads up to Mount Brinchang at over 2000 metres. It is rarely used because it is no ifs ands or buts difficult, so if you are new to trekking, then I don't advise this. Even experienced trekkers have gotten lost in this trail. However, if you have a guide, I'd strongly advise it. The peak of Mount Brinchang boasts a spectacular view of the surrounding rolling hills on a clear day. Towards the peak itself, the middle of the trail passes through the fairy-like mossy forest, and due to its buildings and appearance, is sometimes referred to as the elfin or dwarf forest.

Trail 2 starts from the back of Sam Poh Buddhist temple. It is yet an additional one difficult trek with fullness of rolling path and three steep descends. Trail 2 joins with Trail 3.

Trail 3 begins from Arcadia Cottage. This trail is easy, but it meets with Trail 2 and from here, it can get quite challenging. It leads you up to Mount Berembun at 1,800 metres. Mount Berembun means Misty Mountain. If it gets too tough, you can branch off at Trail 5 but you will miss going up to Mount Berembun. However, if you continue at Trail 3, you'll eventually meet Trail 7 and Trail 8. Estimation about 4 hours for the complete trek. And once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with the view of Tanah Rata.

Trail 4 is one of the more favorite trails as it is easy and will lead to the Parit Waterfall. It will take nearby 30 minutes and has a good picnic spot. Start from either the forest division or behind the orchad Inn Hotel. This is one of Jim Thompson's favourite trails, and I'd advise it to you.

Trail 5 begins from Mardi, or the Malaysian Agriculture research and improvement Institute. It is an easy trail through the woodlands and joins with Trail 3.

Trail 7 also begins from Mardi, but this time it goes level to Mount Berembun. This one is very difficult and challenging.

Trail 8 is an additional one way to get to Mount Berembun and it meets Trail 9, which comes from Robinson Waterfall.

Trail 9 or Trail 9A is also known as the Robinson Waterfall trail. This one is very favorite and starts from the Robinson power middle point and ends at Tanah Rata. For 9A, it's no ifs ands or buts a detour that takes you to the Boh estate, and this is less steep compared to if you continue on Trail 9. When you are nearing the waterfalls, you will hear the sound of gushing water. It will take about one hour.

There are other trails as well, and you can all the time ask the hotel staff for some recommendation. I hope you will try at least one trail. You will be well rewarded with some of the most spectacular views. You might also spot a few exotic animals and plants like the white coral rock, wild orchids, mossy forest trees, the shy banded-leaf monkeys, wild lizards, birds, snakes, insects and many other jungle creatures.

A must see at Cameron Highlands is the Rafflesia, a parasitic plant indigenous to the region. The Rafflesia is said to be the largest flower in the world. Even the smallest can weigh nearby 10 kilogrammes. It looks and smells like rotting flesh, and locals call them 'corpse flower'. The Rafflesia is right on a must see. Ask for a tour, as you will not be able to find it on your own.

If you are not curious in corporeal activity, Cameron Highlands is a breathtaking place for you to just get away from the city for a day or two. Bring some board games, a thick novel, and just laze around, soaking in the lovely mountain air that the British loved so much!

End

Well, this is the end of the guide for Cameron Highlands. I hope you've enjoyed yourself with stories of Cameron Highlands, and that you will have a great time walking the nature trails, shopping for fresh flowers and honey, and trying the steamboat.

Until the next time, Selamat Tinggal or goodbye!

Geisha - Flowers of the Willow World

Often referred to as the "flowers of the willow world" Geisha are an enduring stamp of Japan whose possible beauty, grace, charm, and artistic talent have been admired for centuries. The word geisha means artist in Japanese, and they have been traditionally considered professional performers who entertain guests straight through a series of time honored arts such as Japanese aged dance, singing, playing of various musical instruments, flower arrangement, tea ceremony, and calligraphy.

Historically Geisha began their training at a very young age, and although girls were occasionally sold to geisha houses known as okiya, this was not coarse institution in most reputable districts in Japan. When girls first arrived to the okiya they were imaginable to survive the first stage of training known as shikomi, which involved hard manual labor as maids who were subject to the beckoned call of their seniors. The work was exceedingly difficult, and was intended to test the strength, will, and integrity of the young novices. In increasing to the strenuous work, they would be imaginable to wait late into the night for the experienced geisha to return from engagements to help them before retiring for the evening.

When not working in the okiya, the shikomi would attend classes to study dancing, singing, and the playing of traditional musical instruments. Once the pupil became proficient they would then be required to pass a final dance exam before advancing to the second stage of training called minarai. This stage of training relieved them from their housekeeping duties, and allowed them to focus on applying what they had learned by attending banquets called ozashiki, in which the guests gift were attended to by geisha. Soon thereafter they begin the third, final, and most prominent stage of training known as Maiko. Maiko are apprentices who study under established Geisha. The training involves along the mentor to her engagements and observing the proper etiquette of the seasoned professional. This association is very prominent to the Maiko, as it teaches her the proper way of serving tea, playing the shamisen, dancing, and the art of casual conversation, all of which are critical to devotee to assure hereafter invitations to various tea houses and group gatherings.

Contemporary geisha, though much fewer in numbers, still live collectively during their apprenticeship in okiya in areas called hanamachi, and often begin their training after completing junior high school, high school, or college. Maiko still study instruments such as the shakuhachi and shamisen, and are well versed in literature, poetry, tea ceremony, wearing kimono, and traditional Japanese dance. The district of Gion Kobu in the city of Kyoto is now considered the epicenter of contemporary geisha. The life of a geisha still resides in the elegant cultured world known as karyukai, and they are often hired to attend parties and gatherings at tea houses and traditional Japanese restaurants. The time spent with guests is measured by burning an incense stick known as senkodai.

Cambodia and Back

We went overland from Bangkok, taking a bus to a border marked by tacky casinos. We paid our visa, were photographed by customs and walked from the second to the third world. Our taxi, a fifteen year old Toyota sedan, would take us to Battanbang, Cambodia's second largest city.

The journey took seven hours and it gave us an opportunity to ease into the country in a way that jet voyage can not. The main road south, connecting the two countries, was potholed dirt, practically as bad as our driveway in Santa Fe, Nm. It was dry season, yet even so, the land appeared fertile with rice fields spotted with fish ponds. We passed any colorfully descriptive signs showing citizen giving up rifles for shovels that read: "We don't need weapons anymore."

Japanese School Girls

Battanbang is slightly off the traveler map. It has a happening market and a challenging local road scene along the Sang Sanker river. Helen, my wife, had grown up in Southeast Asia. Her first impression, which held for in any place but Angkor Watt, was that Cambodia was like Thailand in the seventies. Tourists are not seen as walking Atm machines yet. You can still have a real conversation with people.

After settling at our hotel, a young man who introduced himself as Chris offered to show us the local sites. The next day, we were off on his motorbikes, traveling on dirt roads straight through small house farms. I wasn't too implicated about where we were going. I just wanted him to show us what he conception was important.

The countryside was beautiful with kampongs surrounded by bananas, mangos, palms and avocado trees. Chickens, pigs, rats, dogs and cattle meandered about. After about forty-five minutes, occasionally eating "Cambodian snow" (road dust), we arrived at what looked like a mesa rising up from the plains of rice fields. This was one of the centers of doing for the Khmer Rouge.

After about a twenty little climb up steps, we reached the top of a rounded hill with some flat areas. While we rested on the steps of a Buddhist stupa, Chris told in detail how uncles were killed while mother and father narrowly escaped, though they were separated for five years. The catalogue was heart wrenching. Pol Pot was no longer just one of many distant, twentieth century figures who perpetrated genocide.

We were shown a big open hole prominent down into a deep cave. citizen were tortured and then pushed into the blackness to die. But many didn't die. So those who lived fed on those who died until they died.

Now, the bones were stacked in a wire cage. Next to it, a reclining Buddha, candles, the smell of incense.

"What about all the army who supported Pol Pot?" I asked. "Where are they?"

"They were young. No one could identify who they are now."

Even though there are plans for war criminal trails soon, and there have been elections, Chris was not very hopeful about the future. How could anyone be? Every Cambodian lost house members to Pol Pot and the perpetrators could be your neighbor. Some of the top citizen who helped to orchestrate the genocide still have political power in the current government

At the bottom of the site, we rested for lunch. A coconut with a straw. Noodles and mysterious flesh in broth. And we discuss the culinary merit of discrete meats.

Getting down to basics, I asked him, "But which do you like better? Dog, pig or rat?"

"Dog," he replied with the assured confidence. "It's rich, like beef."

(Ps: for those of you with an entrepreneurial bent, the Us has an excess of dog meat, wastefully incinerated at our shelters.)

Having a second helping of noodles, Chris explained that even eating insects without permission while revolutionary work on collectives was a capital offence. All food had to be given over. Rice was exported to China. Chris had starved when he was a young child.

No wonder the market has baskets of beetles, frogs and grass hoppers sautéed in soy sauce. It is all childhood relax food. Appropriately, our last stop was a distillery, where we indulged in fresh pineapple and rice whiskey.

Leaving Battanbang the next morning, a little hung over, we traveled to Angkor Watt by communal water taxi. We sat on crowded, uncomfortable wooden benches with grandma and her chickens, sacks of rice and the elderly Dutch join with their suitcases, squatted on the ground next to the deafening smoke coughing diesel engine.

After a few minutes, we jumped on top of the boat's roof tin, using our luggage, two small day packs, as a back rest. From our perch (still keeping our ear plugs in) we saw river village life as it was and has been for hundreds of years: fisherman casting their nets, temples and houses built on stilts.

The next day, we visited Angkor Watt-- impressive, even to a jaded ruin visitor. It is not just one site, but several, and each is grand in its scale and detail. Here is Cambodia's glorious past, when their great kings dominated most of Southeast Asia and built monuments of Mount Meru, the mythical Hindu and Buddhist town of the universe.

Cambodians take such pride in Angkor as a seal of Khmer destiny that when a Thai actor recently said that the ruins were for real part of Thailand, it caused rioting. Never mind that Angkor is managed by a Japanese company which gives hardly anyone back for the preservation of the monuments. The site attracts thousands every day. To see it with any peace you have to get up early and beat the tour busses.

In the town of Siem Reap, where Angkor is located, beggars missing hands or legs squat in front of bars favorite with westerners. A few hawk knockoffs of tour books. Some of the most fertile farmland and gemstone areas are still heavily mined.

I am a cut throat bargainer but here I give them nearly what they want every time. The incompatibility between relax and strife costs less than a latté at Starbucks. I don't want postcards, but I buy a pair of sandals from a girl selling them who hounds me for half a mile.

Cambodia economically wasn't much distinct in the early sixties than now prosperous Thailand, but how do you make up for thirty years of civil war? That border road from Thailand-- paving it would cost less than a resurfacing a secondary highway connecting any American town to a suburb.

On our last day back from touring ruins, we stopped at the children's hospital funded by a Swiss philanthropist. A banner above the road read that you can save a child's life by giving blood, which Cambodians are reluctant to do for cultural reasons. We wanted to give some money.

After the donation, Helen told the guard that she was giving blood but her husband, she said, pointing to me, was too scared. Well, it didn't hurt much and it was harder than giving money; but I got a free tee shirt, butter cookies and some vitamins.

From Angkor, we traveled overland by bus to the capitol, Phnom Penn, suffering six hours of the hokiest romantic Cambodian karaoke videos. I watched a man pull large spiders out of a paper bag and eat them leg by leg, chewing the body just like a soft shell crab. He licked his lips with delight.

I chastised myself for not being more courageous and buying some at the bus center to sample, but Helen said I shouldn't be so hard on myself. It is one of those things you need man to walk you straight through the first time.

Phnom Penn is situated beautifully on the vast Mekong river. Its streets are graced by French colonial architecture. The city has relatively few cars and busses, so pollution is minimal and unlike Bangkok, traffic moves faster then 5 km an hour.

Sitting in one of the riverside cafes, it is hard to imagine that this city was totally evacuated by the Khmer Rouge thirty years ago. But it was, and the resulting bones have become big business. The first thing any tuk tuk driver asks is, "U wanta see killing fields?"

I had seen sufficient bones, but I went to see the notorious torture prison, S21. The dilapidated three story concrete u-shaped building surrounded by razor wire was once a school. It was the last stop for over 17,000 prisoners. Records of the detainees were meticulously preserved under the supervision of a former math teacher.

On the first floor, we passed large photos of mutilated bodies above cots. These were the last citizen killed right, photographed by the North Vietnamese army when they drove out the Khmer. Iron and wire torture implement were still in situ. The third floor had rooms of black and white mug shots, slightly larger than passport size, in row after row behind large glass frames.

Babies, children, teenagers, young adults, middle age, elderly, were neatly arranged according to age. The dark eyes peered out, sometimes blank, sometimes in fear and unimaginable terror.

Who were these citizen who died, bleeding upside down on wooden posts, or straight through electrocution while writing seven hundred page autobiographies for their captors-- listing their bourgeois house members who would also be gathered up to confess and die?

They were not special. They were the same as the citizen I'd seen since I'd entered the country. They were me. They were you, too. And who killed them? Same as the above, minus the babies. But the most productive recruits though were young children who could be for real brainwashed. citizen in their thirties and forties now. Perhaps, today, Chris' neighbor.

The revolution gained momentum partly because of Kissinger's underground war. Evacuate Phnom Penn. The Americans are going to bomb us! But once they got all the teachers, civil servants, merchants, intellectuals, and artists out into the country and found out they made lousy farmers who couldn't be reformed, they killed them. Not long after that, they killed the farmers who got disillusioned with killing and starving.

After two days in the capitol, we left a country where perhaps every person has post traumatic stress. Yet at the airport, I noticed that there were no guards carrying Uzis. Every country I've been to has armed guards at airports. I then realized that while my stay in Cambodia, I didn't see anyone carrying weapons. This was extraordinary. I had never been in a country without an armed soldiery or police presence.

These thoughts seemed just like a dream flying home on a 747, 400 series. Nothing like being handed a hot wash cloth to remind me of my privileged status in the world's economic pecking order.

What follows now is a bit of a postscript which crystallized the whole pilgrimage. We rested in La, where we had prearranged to meet friends with two youthful daughters. Our penance to the girls for dragging them to the Getty Museum was a trip to Universal Studios.

In the internal chaos of jetlag, Cambodia was a lifetime away, until a walk straight through a fun house where piles of bones were stacked, finding exactly like the ones in the killing caves. Later, in a live "Fear Factor," a Tv show I hadn't heard of before that day, two contestants vied with each other over who could experience a self generated electric shock and eat "gross" insects.

It was merely amusement. Yet given how fear has been used to manipulate citizen over the past few years, our American dream is not as far from the Cambodia's contact as we might think. It doesn't take any devils or demons to originate killing fields. lowly citizen do just fine with the right political leadership.

How Television Changed Feminism

Introduction

Over a hundred years ago Susan B. Anthony and Mary Wollstonecraft were part of a woman's movement centered on getting women equal ownership under the law; the ownership to vote and not be considered property. They would not have imagined that one day, on a form of media called television women would play the role of president. The idea of women campaigning on television for the president of the United States would amaze them beyond belief. This narrative will assess and variation television "girl power" with all three "waves" of feminist theory. This narrative will primarily focus on the fantastic success of the Spice Girls and the Power Puff Girls.

Japanese School Girls

The feminist movement has been divided into three waves. The next generations of women ordinarily draw the line of demarcation. They often distinguish themselves from the last movement with new innovative theories on what it means to be a woman; this is how the waves have been established. The First-Wave as such was advanced in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. At the time, their movement was more commonly referred to as the Suffrage movement. They were generally involved with human ownership issues.

Girl Power and the First-Wave

Two leaders that emerged out of this movement were Mary Wollstonecraft, from the United Kingdom, and Susan B. Anthony from the United States. At this time, women were like property or animals - not human beings. They were considered to be closer to the intellect of a child than a man. Mary Wollstonecraft wrote a book on the issue called Vindication of the ownership of Women. In this book she explores her disdain for her situation. She voices her contempt with the spurious "idea that women are created plainly to be ministers to the amusement, enjoyment, and gratification of men" (Wollstonecraft 3). These ideas were woven into fabric of her society. The same was true for Susan B. Anthony in the United States. The laws needed changing. The foundation needed changing. They both were calling for re-education within their society.

The movement wished to persuade population from the falsity of female incompetence. They both had a full "appreciation of the sanctity of women's domestic duties, and never undervalued for a moment the high significance of these duties, either to the individual, the family, or the State" (3). The First-Wave argued that "the more comprehension women acquire, the more they will be attached to their duty-comprehending it-for unless they comprehend it... No authority can make them discharge it in a virtuous manner"(Wollstonecraft 4).

Wollstonecraft placed an appellation on the women in her generation. To her they were "barren bloomers." "One cause of this barren blooming I attribute to a false ideas of education, gathered from the books written on this branch by men who, considering females rather as women than human creatures, have been more anxious to make them alluring mistresses" (Wollstonecraft 31).

All the women - the mothers, the wives and the girls becoming women had been so "bubbled by this specious homage, that the civilized women of the (past) century, with a few exceptions, (were) only anxious to inspire love, when they ought to cherish a nobler ambition, and by their abilities and virtues exact respect"(Wollstonecraft 32).

The respect that Wollstonecraft is demanding here was achieved in the suffrage movement with women receiving the right to vote, but the Spice Girls exacted this respect with their music and television fame. Their girl band supplanted boy bands and in some ways garnered more popularity than The Beatles.

Their first debut song "Wannabe" entered the charts at amount 3 in the U.K. Before thoughprovoking up to amount 1 the following week. It stayed there for seven weeks. The song proved to be a global hit. It hit amount one in 31 countries. It simultaneously became the biggest selling single by an all-female group and also the biggest selling debut of all time.

"Wannabe" also proved to be a catalyst in helping the Spice Girls break into the notoriously difficult U. S. Store when it debuted on the Hot 100 Chart at amount 11. At the time, this was the highest level - ever debut by a British act in the U.S., beating the old narrative held by The Beatles for "I Want to Hold your Hand". "Wannabe" reached amount one in the U.S. Four weeks later.

In November 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut album Spice in Europe. The success was unprecedented and drew comparisons to Beatlemania - due to sheer volume of interest in the Group. In just seven weeks Spice had sold 1.8 million copies in Britain alone, making the Spice Girls the fastest selling British act since The Beatles.

During the time of Mary Wollstonecraft, Susan B. Anthony and the First-Wave, many male thinkers made the conference that men were physically first-rate and men went on to make the erroneous conclusion that men were also intellectually superior. "Women are, in fact, so much degraded by mistaken notions... This synthetic frailness produces a propensity to tyrannize" (Wollstonecraft 36). This explains the current success of female super heroes like the Power Puff Girls. These girls not only have first-rate force but they often fight and defeat men. Psychologically, these fictional television images counter act the illogical conclusions derived from nineteenth century philosophy.

The Power Puff Girls show revolves nearby the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup; three little girls with super powers. The plot of a typical episode consists of a humorous variation of standard superhero fare, with the girls using their powers to defend their town from varied villains, such as bank robbers, mad scientist, aliens or giant monsters, and often dealing with general mundane issues that young children face, such as dependence on teddy bears and such. The show derives from a great deal of the humor from pop culture parody.

During the First-Wave, Wollstonecraft's book was a vast help in the cause. In Britain the Suffragettes campaigned for the women's right to vote. In 1918 the Representation of the population Act 1918 was passed. This granted the right to vote to women over the age of 30. This right was only granted to women who owned houses. This right was finally extended to all women over eighteen in 1928.

In America, the First-Wave of feminism complex a wide range of woman groups from such conservative camps as the Woman's Christian Temperance Union to liberal groups like the National Woman Suffrage Association. In the United States, First-Wave feminism is considered to have ended with the tube of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution (1919), granting women the right to vote.

The Second-Wave of feminism began to be used to communicate a newer feminist movement that focused as much on fighting soci-economic inequalities as further political inequalities.

Girl Power and Second-Wave

The Second-Wave has been said to have lasted from the 1960s to the 1980s. They chose to attempt into the inequality of laws, and the culture at large. The Second-Wave was very interested in ads on television that ridiculed women - treating them as frivolous sex objects for the "male gaze." The male gaze is a term used by the movement to communicate male dominance and objectification found in film and television. Others have said that the Second-Wave Feminism has existed continuously since the sixties, and some remnants continue to coexist with what is termed Third-Wave Feminism. Although both the Second and Third-Wave are heavily complex in Feminist ideas as it applies to television - they clearly have very diametrically opposing views.

Second-Wave Feminism saw cultural and political inequalities as inextricably linked. The movement encouraged women to understand aspects of their own personal lives as deeply politicized. According to them, this community was and is a corollary of a male dominant, sexist, buildings of power. First-Wave Feminism focused on absolute ownership such as suffrage and Second-Wave Feminism was largely involved with other issues of equality, such as discrimination, gender stereotyping and objectification. The Second-Wave at the time was more popularly called The Women's Liberation Movement.

This idea of sexism and gender stereotypes was applied to television commercials and television shows. They continue to commentary on television soaps, cosmetic commercials and voyeuristic "reality" television. Their perspective on the Power Puff Girls and the Spice Girls differ from the perspective of the Third-Wave movement.

One leader in this Second-Wave movement was a woman named Betty Friedan. Friedan compiled her thoughts in a book called The Feminine Mystique. In her book, Friedan outlines a dramatic discontent for superficial solutions to the gender stereotype problem. After the First-Wave movement, things roughly reverted to an eighteen hundreds mindset. It was roughly as if the movement had never occurred. The Second-Wave blamed television ads and television shows for this manipulation of the female mind. At the end of the nineteen-fifties, the median marriage age of women in America had dropped to 20 and was still dropping into the teens. Millions of girls were engaged by the age of 17.

"The proportion of women attending college in comparison with men dropped from 47 per cent in 1920 to 35 per cent in 1958. In the First-Wave, women had fought for higher education; now girls went to college to get a husband" (Friedan 16). The stint of time between the First and Second-Wave could be described as a wave going in the other direction. Instead of women seeking study - over half of the women in college were not just going to get their M.R.S. They were even dropping out of school to marry a man. According to the Second-Wave, the Leave It to Beaver images and industrial ads with the women as a happy homemaker had a serious influence on women. Television marketing, by big business, had an influence that the First-Wave could not have imagined.

As American girls began getting married in high school, Friedan and others in the starting of the movement advanced film and television theories as to why so many shows depicted women as dependent on a man for contentment and fulfillment. On this issue, it would seem that the Second and Third-Waves would be on the same side, but they were not. Second-Wave feminism promoted and still promotes the awareness of an impervious socio-political monster called "the media" that enduringly stereotypes and objectifies women.

According to the Third-Wave, this mind state keeps the movement in a perpetual victim status. This victim mentality, ironically enough, is a part of the gender stereotype that the Second-Wave claims to be protesting against. Third-Wave feminism promotes using mass media as a tool for female empowerment.

The Spice Girls found contentment in "girl power." They found solidarity among their female friends - not marriage. The goal in life for Spice Girls and the Third-Wave movement was fame/power - not love. On the contrary, the Second-Wave does not agree with the Spice Girls or the Third-Wave movement. They have attacked these women for parading as sex objects for the male gaze. To the Second-Wave - the Spice Girls would be no separate than the manufacturers in the late fifties that put out brassieres with false bosoms of foam rubber for little girls of ten.

In the early fifties many women only left their homes "to shop and chauffeur their children, or attend a collective engagement with their husbands" (Friedan 17). They were much like the soccer moms of today. Girls were growing up in America without ever having jobs outside the home. Then "in the late fifties, a sociological phenomenon was suddenly remarked: a third of American women now worked" (17). Most of the women were older and very few were pursuing careers. They were married women who "held part-time jobs, selling or secretarial, to put their husbands straight through school, their sons straight through college, or to help pay the mortgage" (17).

Their only goal in life was to be excellent wives and mothers. They sought to be the virtuous woman in proverbs 31. They imagined having five children and a beautiful house. Their only identity was to get and keep their husbands. "They had no notion for the 'unfeminine' problems of the world outside the home; they wanted the men to make the major decisions. They gloried in their role as women, and wrote proudly on the census blank: Occupation: housewife" (Friedan 18).

Nobody debated women's inferiority or superiority to men; men and women were plainly different. "Words like 'emancipation' and 'career' sounded strange and embarrassing; no one had used them for years"(Friedan 19). The Second-Wave prolonged to criticize images on television shows and the shopping commercials. These shows never mentioned the female issues, like female independence, that women were obviously struggling with in the real world. Third-Wave television personalities like the Spice Girls or the Power Puff Girls attempted to do something about these images. They've decided to redefine the female images.

The Power Puff Girls has a very stylized, minimalistic optical look, reminiscent of 1950s and 1960s pop art. They have taken this image of the fifties housewife with no concerns of the outside "unfeminine" world and they invert those messages. In the show Power Puff Girls, these little homemaker girls watch the news, see problems in the world and go out to fight the problems of the world on their own.

This show is a current American thoughprovoking television series about three little girls in kindergarten who have super powers. The show was created by animator Craig McCracken. The series is a spoof on American superheroes as well as Japanese Tokusatu heroes like Super Sentai. The show makes heavy use of references to 1960s pop culture, particularly the illustrious English musical group The Beatles.

The Second-Wave questions these "positive" role models like the Power Puff Girls. They are super heroes with super powers but will girls indeed grow up with super powers? Will this indeed help women deal with the problems of the world when they turn 23, 33, or 43? The Second-Wave is very persuaded that these women will not look to these role models in their maturity but will inevitably fall into the role of a desperate house wife.

Friedan says the desperate house wife has a question and "a hunger that food cannot fill. It persists in women whose husbands are struggling interns and law clerks, or successful doctors and lawyers; in wives of workers and executives who make ,000 a year or ,000. It is not caused by lack of material advantages; it may not even be felt by women preoccupied with desperate problems of hunger, poverty or illness. And women who think it will be solved by more money, a bigger house, a second car, thoughprovoking to a great suburb, often seek it gets worse" (Friedan 27).

The Second-Wave wanted to move past just having voting rights. They wanted equal representation in politics and in television culture. "The fact is that No one (at that time was) muttering angrily about women's rights, even though more and more women had gone to college" (Friedan 29). The Second-Wave movement began because Friedan and others could not understand why media studies showed that women were going to college and blaming study for "making them want 'rights'...giving them work dreams and making them feel it was not enough plainly to be a housewife and mother" (Friedan 29). Friedan made the case for the need of a second movement or Second-Wave of feminism because she felt that she heard the voice of women yelling "I want something more than my husband and my children and my home" and she saw media trying to silence that voice. The Third-Wave was started for similar reasons.

Girl Power and the Third Wave

David Sinclair wrote a book on the Spice Girls called Wannabe. Sinclair traces the origins of the girl power slogan and how the Spice Girls played a part in this movement. Apart from reclaiming the word "girl" from the clutches of the politically exact who had "stigmatized it as a sexist put down" when referring to whatever of the female persuasion aged about 13 or over - "girl power proved a remarkably inspirational slogan, a vague but persuasive notion, whose influence finally extended well beyond the confines of the pop world" (Sinclair, 60).

Much has been said and written about the idea of "girl power." The slogan first surfaced in collective as the title of an album by the female duo Shampoo, and by a thoughprovoking coincidence, their song "Girl Power" was released as a single one week before 'Wannabe' in July 1996. Nothing more has ever been heard of Shampoo, but their girl power slogan has lasted for over a decade.

Geri, the leader of the Spice Girls, was in favor of using this slogan. She was all the time the most vocal proponent, although once she began using the slogan in interviews the girls all took it up as an narrative of faith. "A 'Power Oath' duly evolved: "I being of sound mind and new Wonderbra do solemnly promise to cheer and dance and zigzag-ah Ariba! Girl Power!"(Sinclair, 60). It may not have been the most profound expression in the history of the movement, but the girl power philosophy was not an empty slogan to be taken lightly.

The idea, in essence, was "that girls should stand up for themselves as individuals. They should stick up for each other collectively and - having identified what they want out of life - go out and grab it with both hands" (Sinclair 60).

Sarah Banet-Weiser, in her narrative Girls Rule, outlines the girl power tension. Many Third-Wave Feminists consider consumer culture as "a place of empowerment and as a means of differentiating themselves from Second-Wave feminist" (Newcomb, 335). Second-Wave Feminism has tended, on the whole, to be vital of the misogyny of beloved consumer culture and they protests having whatever to do with it.

Second-Wave Feminism is "at times overly romanticized in terms of its commitment to collective protest politics, and there seems to be a kind of reluctance on the part of them to rethink and redefine politics According to the stated needs and desires of the Third-Wave Feminism..." (Newcomb 336). For the movement to believe all women "share a feminist politics and that we all want the same thing is very problematic" (Newcomb 336). To insist on a universal feminist standpoint in many ways guarantees a universal stand still. It "functions as a kind of refusal to identify what the 'thing' is that we all apparently want" (336).

The Third-Wave has its philosophical problems also. Girl - Power says that girls are powerful, strong, and independent but "the industrial merchandising of these claims demonstrates a profound ambivalence about these feminist politics in general" (336). On one hand, the Third-Wave of Feminism is a continuation of the Second-Wave. On the other hand, some who claim to be part of the Second-Wave often engage in intellectual trysts with the new wave. The Second-Wave seems more intent on perpetuating the victim status or victim stereotype. They argued against this stereotype but provided no solutions. The Third-Wave knew they would never wholly satisfy the complaints of the Second-Wave because Friedan herself defined the question as "a question with no name" (Friedan 16).

In her book Girl Heroes: The New Force in beloved Culture, Susan Hopkins argues that "the old way of blaming media and beloved culture for encouraging girls to be submissive is outdated" (Hopkins 4). The new girl hero is on a quest for stardom, a quest for immortality, and a quest for being. In an age of images, my space, face book and television, many girls feel existence is equivalent to fame. They want to be somebody.

The Spice Girls have managed to dole out girl-power messages and galvanize powerful-girl images from pop culture. They still remain feminine and like girls. Second-Wave theorist would argue that women like the Spice Girls aren't indeed in control. "Far from denying differences in gender - as the old school feminist had sought out to do - girl power encouraged the use of sexual charm as a weapon" to be deployed along with any other available skills that would help to get a corollary (Sinclair 60). According to the Spice Girls, "Boys were Ok in their place, but they shouldn't be allowed to distract a girl from her goals in life, or even worse, distance her from her friends. corollary the advice and, so the ideas goes, nothing will stop a girl from achieving her ambitions for long" (60).

Their song "Wannabe" in many ways outlined the philosophy of the new wave. "To be a feminist in the nineties," Melanie C said, "means having something to say for yourself" (Sinclair 60). In the new wave you can wear mascara and high heels and look like a "babe" and make as much of a point as if you shaved your head and a burnt your bra. Melanie C from the Spice Girls made a point to say, "There's no way I'm ever burning my wonder bra. I couldn't. I'm nothing without it" (Sinclair, 60).

To make the "formula" work in the context of television pop-culture their required wit, charm and ruthless sense of rational self - interest. These were qualities all five girls had. These girls used their sexuality to get what they wanted out of a male-dominated industry. Soon, "male teen idols (were) secondary - the former fantasy object in contemporary girl culture is the celebrity female" (Hopkins 4). Large posters of The Beatles, Bay City Rollers, Skyhooks, and Duran Duran were in the bedrooms of girls growing up in the '60s, '70s and '80s. Now those posters have been supplanted for large posters of pop sensations like Spice Girls, Eve and Pink.

The Spice Girls manager, Simon Fuller, plunged them into merchandising and they became a regular feature of the British press. Suddenly - "Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh and Sporty were the most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George and Ringo" and they became "a collective phenomenon that changed the policy of beloved music and beloved culture" (Sinclair, 64).

The members went their detach ways at the end of 2000 to focus on their solo careers. On June 28, 2007 they reformed as a quintet and in November 2007 a most hits album was released to accompany the group's current world tour.

In total, their first album sold 3 million copies in Britain and peaked at amount one for fifteen non-consecutive weeks. In Europe, the album became the biggest selling album of 1997 and was certified 8x Platinum by the Ifpi for sales in excess of 8 million copies. It was also the biggest selling in the U.S. In 1997. It made 7x platinum in the U.S. By the Riaa.

The third episode of Hopkins' book discusses how the violence, aggression and moral code of the former male action hero genre has been appropriated by female action heroines. These new girl heroines, Hopkins argues, have a serious element of the "bad girl" in them, not all the time making the standard moral choices and sometimes acting selfishly for their own power.

There was a custom held for children television in June 2000 at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York called "A Kids Got to Do what a Kid's Got to Do." One of the seminars was titled "Girl Power: Creating distinct role Models for Girls." Those in payment of this conference "lauded Nickelodeon's efforts over the past 20 years to challenge former gender stereotypes on children's television by featuring girls as former lead characters" (Newcomb 332). A relationship between those two concepts - girl and power - was something that had never been a part of American culture or thought. Now, Girl Power has become "normalized" and part of everyday television. "The empowerment of girls is now something that is more or less taken for granted by both children and parents"(332). Indeed, the rhetoric of girl power has found currency in roughly every facet of contemporary children's beloved culture.

The Second-Wave would argue that girls cannot aspire to be super heroines, nor can they learn real-life empowerment skills from such heroines; furthermore, many of these new girl superheroes are sexy and object of the male gaze. The Second-Wave feels that when brain and business-savvy stand without together with sexuality and beauty the doors of power will be open to the masses of girls.

Girl Power or Hoax?

This new breed of girl power is unquestionable in terms of their media saturation and omniscience, but it is also arguable that they are a very exaggerated and thoughprovoking stock of an ingenious marketing exercise. In other words, the Second-Wave believes that the Third-Wave may be nothing more than a timely executed industrial hoax.

The Second-Wave also wonders if a 13-year-old will continue to model her life on the amorphous illusion of the Power Puff Girls. One day when she wakes up will her old self be wholly disparate and unrecognizable to her gift self. In hunt for everyday collective norms will these fantasies dissipate?
Hopkins makes a strong conference that "Fame is replacing romance as the dominant female fantasy (...) Love and marriage is no longer the final talk to immature feminine desire" (Hopkins 189-191). "No longer just an actress or a pop star, the female celebrity is fast acquiring the status of secular Goddess, thoughprovoking an roughly religious reverence in fans"(Hopkins 182).

Paul Wilson and Andy Watkins were producers at Absolute when the Spice Girls came straight through for the first time. These men are part of this male dominant entertainment industry. They assuredly claim that girl power is not a hoax.

Wilson once said, when referring to the Spice Girls, "I'm not sure other executives understood how great it was... When you talk about girl power that was it... Because they'd take any person on." (Sinclair, 62)

Socio-cultural Implications of artificial Hormones

The environmental and communal implications of any sphere of influence or beloved topic are clearly shaped by societies' values and practices..  When patriotism overflows into the ethno-centric realm however, we can occasionally lose that relative perspective so needful in production decisions that will impact our following generations.  Sometimes it's that minute bird on our shoulder whispering in our ear that urges us to turn our head; to think twice about the direction we're heading.

In the Us we love our labels, especially when they reflect our varied states of dis-ease.  Medically coined, menopause refers to the time in a woman's life when she ceases to produce levels of hormones needful for child-birth.  With the Us holding the report for top rate of hysterectomies performed I thought, "there must be a logical reason, right?"  Of course, that's debatable.

Japanese School Girls

So Why Not artificial Hormones?

Synthetics come with the price of un-wanted and un-necessary physiological damage.  Although they resemble hormones molecularly, the nature of their constituents is ordinarily not well tolerated by our systems.  Some will argue that the active constituents in hormone replacement, an equine source for example, intimately resemble human physiology; rendering them quite useful.  One skeptic of bio-identical hormone exchange went on to mention that the equine sources were "necessary" because they're neuro-protective as well.  While these factors are true of the active pharmaceutical agent, it is however un-true of the excipients contained within.  Excipients and binders are the compounds used to deliver treatment into the body so that they become beneficial in a pre-determined destination within the body.  Along the way, these excipients can leave residues or alter other chemical processes in the body disrupting homeostasis.

A modern study led by Dr. Hugh Taylor within the agency of Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale School of treatment showed that artificial structures altered the gene expression responsible for not only a developing fetus, but also affected long term genetic memory (imprinting) into adulthood!1

Hot Flash, What Hot Flash?

Some of you have heard that original Japanese women don't have a "word" for hot flash.  You might be surprised to hear that very few foreign cultures surely do!  Not only do these cultures not sense menopause as we do here in the states, but their incidences of osteoperosis are also incredibly lower compared to ours.  A phenomenon?  The sass is in lifestyle.  Relying on a wide variety of foods largely plant and fish based, diet is their key to coolness during life's (hormonal) transitions.

Animals Injected With Hormones

Think about a big bloated unhappy cow, overweight, under-exercised, and all caged up.  Nice visual?  When we eat the flesh and drink the milk from these animals, the influence is seen in girls heading into early puberty, difficult menstruation, endometriosis, preponderance of female obesity, and prolonged increased circulation of non-biologically beneficial hormones.

Plastics and Xeno-Estrogens

These estrogen-like compounds are recognized by and invted to dock at estrogen receptor sites throughout the body.  These freely circulating artificial compounds accumulate, yet lack any physiological viability.  As they accumulate, xeno-estrogens lead to the preponderance of tissue growth surrounding receptor sites.  This un-necessary tissue has an affinity for accumulating in the reproductive organs and connected structures (ovaries, uterus, breasts, fallopian tubes, cervix, etc) contributing to the risk of developing connected cancers.

What You Can Do

Educate yourself!  If you're reading this article, you're off to an awesome start!

Accurately correlate hormone levels with precision saliva testing to allow yourself a wide variety of possible treatment options.

Buy organic!  The price you shell out now at the grocery store will be money back in your pocket later.  consider shopping organic; an venture or insurance policy on your health.  Discuss your needs with the local grocer and urge their stocking of organic meat and dairy.  My patients have found that local grocers are inclined to pick up goods once they know you'll be a quarterly shopper.  Having problem looking a local grocer in your area to buy organic?  Specialty farms in your area may supply what you're looking for.

Visit http://www.ewg.org to find a farm near you.

Find safer plastics or plastic alternatives.  Store and heat your foods in glass based products to avoid additional leaching.  Plastic is very porous.  Microwaving foods in plastics changes the chemical structures that have nowhere else to go, but into your food.  Try stainless steel and hemp products.

Visit http://www.care2.com/greenliving/which-plastics-are-safe.html for a list of safer plastic choices.

Recapping, the Top reasons to fore-go artificial and consider alternatives are:

Synthetics:

Upset genetic expression in both fetal amelioration and adulthood

Potentially growth the risk of reproductive cancers such as ovarian, uterine, and breast

Decrease the immune response

Exacerbate pre-existing auto-immune and endocrine issues

Ethical issues regarding their yield and and connected affects upon the environment

In-activates salutary market of already present hormones

attractiveness From the Inside Out - 3 Secrets for True Luminous attractiveness

I'm sure you know the age old saying, 'beauty is only skin deep' and in one sense it is only skin deep if you view the top layer, the first look see, a glance of the outer or the first impression of what you initially see from a place of ego, illusion and being relatively asleep to truth. On the other hand, attractiveness is transparent, luminous shining vitality and is other worldly when you see it from a place of deep truth as it expresses itself through twinkling eyes, soft healthy skin and shiny hair that all share the incommunicable of true attractiveness - that which cannot be touched by any cream, scalpel or tingling burning itchy treatment that all promise endless teenage beauty. attractiveness is an attitude, a confidence, an inner knowing of secrets for classic and ageless living, with grace and appreciation as our dearest companions. Grace and appreciation for every human taste we have from early childhood, through the growing pains of adolescence ~ to the free time and exploration of our twenties - to the choices of family, occupation and the myriad of responsibilities that dot our thirties, forties and onwards to the free time once again of letting go of all that we thought we were and reinventing ourselves so the decades of the fifties, sixties and beyond can allow wisdom and childhood innocence one again to play together and light the way for the ones arrival up behind. I've discovered three minuscule secrets for true luminous attractiveness and I'm excited to share them with you!

The First incommunicable comes as no surprise I'm sure, yet can be difficult to respect and decide to make a life long habit. It's simply getting a good night's sleep, night after night, month after month, year after year for the period of your life. Of procedure they'll be nights were you lay awake wondering, worrying, plotting, planning, wishing and whiling away the hours as your hormones get the great of you, so I'm referring to the majority of nights throughout your life. Manufacture it a priority in your life of setting the stage, the room, the routine and the climate to ensure a good night's sleep because you're in the know about the incommunicable benefits of habitual deeply restorative, regenerative and rejuvenating nighttime sleep. Wherever you are and however you live, traveler or one who is located down, you can choose to make it an foremost priority for your life of beauty. In this way, you receive countless benefits both on the inside and consequently permeating through the outside of your body to express itself on the outside. These are the precious priceless hours when the whole body has a opening to fix itself and build anew for you. When you are in the carport environment called home, it's far easier than when you are traveling. It just takes a minuscule planning though, and here's what you do in all those times that you're in other people's homes, hotels, motels, on planes, trains, or everywhere else life takes you. You have small sacred comforting helpers, like a cozy cashmere shawl, an eye pillow and earplugs, a small scented candle, an international time piece to regulate your body, a sleepy time tea bag, your eco friendly re-usable bottle of water filled with your popular water, and Evian mist for refreshing and hydrating the skin upon waking.

Japanese School Girls

In our community in these trying times it is said we median but a few hours of deep sleep per night, which is why so much advertising focuses on sleep aids of all sorts; and on the repercussions of lack of sleep, like decreased work time due to varied disorders of the mind and body; carelessness and exhaustion mid day, hyper alertness at the wrong time of day, mood swings from excess caffeine consumption through a myriad of power drinks plus the good 'ole cup of coffee or ten that are drunk throughout the day just to stay awake. Dream if you woke up in the morning happy, refreshed and stretched, yawned and moderately in this way welcomed your self to your day. Dream if you had the power to wake up just twenty minutes earlier than you used to because now after a merge of months of steady sleep you want to exercise before you even head for the first cup of warm java! Oh, and you're no ifs ands or buts enjoying that first warm glass of water upon waking to move your bowels and to set the metabolism humming for the rest of the day. Yes, good old -fashioned sleep. A straightforward decision such as not watching the news an hour before bedtime for a month; or inspiring in any heated discussions with your mate, or lengthy listening marathons with girlfriends does wonders for your mind and body in making ready for sleep. Doing nothing other than bathing in the warm cocoon of aromatherapy waters, having sex or gazing moderately at uplifting spiritual readings allows the mind to calm, relax and let go. This will prove the kindest most remarkable thing you can do for your appearing and feeling beautiful that I promise your whole life will take on new perspectives if you can no ifs ands or buts honor this profoundly foremost ancient secret.

Secret whole Two is to view food as your treatment and treatment as your food. I know, here we go again with an old tried and true reality to achieving a lifetime of glowing skin, well working organs, regulated smooth inspiring bowels, and a sense of calm and clarity for the mind that can only be felt with quarterly intervals of nutrient dense foods on a consistent basis day after day, month after month and year after year. I bet you were expecting some brand new incommunicable never before heard of and I'm here to tell you that Grandma knew something. My Grandma was beautiful until the day she passed on and her skin was clear, her eyes shone with a glimmer of youth and she was fully engaged in life all of her 97 years of life! Her condition was perfect, no diabetes, cancer, arthritis or heart problems and when I was a model in Toronto helping pay my way through school where she'd come to a fashion show then we'd go out with my friends afterwards, she'd drive - putting the pedal to the metal as they say, laughing and slapping her knee with glee because she just loved being with we young people! She slept well because of a routine she kept throughout her entire life. She ate close to the earth seasonal foods, being true not to eat cold foods in winter nor hot foods in summer; she sipped on a nip of fine brandy every other day before bed with her tea, and I do mean a nip, a lovely shot glass she was given in Paris, and it was a nice small one unlike the huge long 6 oz versions of today!

Here's the incommunicable of this secret. It's in your perception of, and dedication to this ancient truth that'll get you the results you're looking for with the kicker being quick results you'll no ifs ands or buts see within a month of proper eating! No more bloated, filled out look or feeling because you won't be inflamed on the inside; no more starving moments where you could eat voraciously because you let your self get too empty and then you're way too full and the mind trips follow, and really, no more long drawn out counter effective hours at the gym where I have watched so many habitancy watch Tv while they're working out that I can't Dream why they aren't getting results they desire ~ safe bet to me is the disconnect in the middle of the body and the mind. They both need to be on board when you choose, ingest, assimilate, absorb and eliminate foods, and they both need to be on board together while inspiring the body happily to a toned, tight and healthy look just exquisite for you. So let's get back to using food as your treatment and treatment as your food. Think about it. It makes so much coarse sense to have the idea that if you perceive every thing that goes into your mouth as helping to keep you healthy, beautiful and able to do, go, be and have anything you want because you are full of energy, you can cross so many things off your pail list! You won't even give ill condition a second thought because you're taking care of exactly what's in your control - that is, what goes into your mouth! And so you're concentration and focus is upon upping the quota of feeling and looking great year after year, decade after decade, and it's fun! I roughly forget about sickness or lack of ease within the body (which is how I like to refer to disease) until I get those monthly cramps or feel a tickle in my throat because I'm singing with others who are quite full of the flu. While these times, I fast and drink healing teas that my family has enjoyed forever! Teas are remarkable condition promoting gifts to give yourself, and we even do tea ceremonies with a cool minuscule Japanese tea set we indulged in, setting it up on a sweet bamboo placemat, a red flower aromatherapy candle and easy conversation. Chances are that if everything you eat is determined medicinal along with tastes of your popular sweets, salty or creamy things, you'll voice optimal condition and attractiveness all of your life. Of procedure we can't control many upsetting potential scenes of ill condition that come on due to genetics, or accidents, or the like, so please understand I'm referring to our quality to choose exquisite condition that is our birthright and that is within our control.

If your mind is calm and you have the right attitude around food, you can have a minuscule bit of anything and everything you love and it'll be assimilated, digested and eliminated no ifs ands or buts because you're not freaking out about it's calories, fat, carbohydrate levels etcetera. You're friends with your body and your mind and you'll be rewarded for this. Here's a very easy remedy to your eating. No matter what you eat, all the time ask your self, 'where's the fruit and where's the veggies'.! Even when I eat oatmeal in the morning, adding my ground flax seeds, a few distinct kinds of nuts, a few dried cranberries for sweetness and a minuscule bit of tasty dark Vermont maple syrup, I throw in a few baby carrots, a cut up piece of celery or cucumber and add a small handful of my popular fruit which is blueberries. Sounds weird to add the carrots and celery, but know what? It's delicious! It's colorful, it's crunchy, it's sweet, there's protein, healthy carbs and the bowl is packed with nutrition! Even though a few hours later I'm not hungry, I understand the significance of keeping the metabolism high and Manufacture sure my body knows it'll never be starved, so it can let go of any extra fat that doesn't serve me - and as women we do have more fat than guys and our bodies do hold on tightly if we don't listen and honor it's needs for quarterly eating, and so I have a small apple with my eco friendly bottle of water. I don't no ifs ands or buts think it's principal to all the time merge foods every time we eat, for instance I don't feel the need to have a nut butter with my small apple because my goal is to eat mostly color through the day and that doesn't consist of white, beige or tan colors! And by the way, it goes without saying that when you eat well, when you feed your temple with inspiring colors, and eat in a calm setting, rather than grab and go, quickly, or texting while chomping fully unaware and unplugged as to what you're doing, you'll also eye the joys of exercise, because your body will want to move in surprising ways that please you. Maybe it's not the gym grind, rather a short burst of fifteen minutes a day just to break a sweat and get your muscles, ligaments, joints and body systems oxygenated. Anyway, I'm not sure how long this report is and I need to get to incommunicable whole three ~ I could go on and on about the particulars of eating, sharing recipes for both eating and slathering on your face, hair and body (well I guess you could eat these recipes too!) and my once a week liquid body fasting day; suffice to say how excited I am to share these tips with you because they've served me well in my own life. I'm so passionate about living this way that I've not been to a physician since I was 17 years old (except to have my children because back then mid wife's weren't popular and I was so young that I followed the crowd and ignored my intuition). Oh, and our Kineseologist from time to time because I am active and love his adjustments! Although I honor every woman's choices to take care of her self, I have gone the holistic route and am constantly taken for person way younger than my driver's license says I am! I get such a chuckle out of the surprised looks and comments that we all end up laughing and laughing is a good thing! Which is just icing on the cake so to speak, because I care more about feeling beautiful, clear and clean on the inside, then simply enjoy beautifying the outside because I'm a girly girl!

Secret whole Three is to be happy. Happiness is a great beautifier we've all heard before, and it's true. Happiness keeps us sweet and makes us feel lovely. When we're in love happiness comes easily. As children, we're happy, free and unencumbered. When our occupation is going well and we're acknowledged for a job well done, we smile and glow from within. Hanging out and chilling with friends, traveling to dreamy destinations, and fitting into our skinny jeans all make us happy! Receiving warm hugs from loved ones, and friends bring us happiness. We go straight to our happy place when playing with our animals, and it's super easy to be happy when we feel we look great and are having a good hair day! Lots of experiences and circumstances make us happy! Happiness is an emotional feeling, and it directly affects our looking beautiful on the outside.
